EDMONTON — Gord Bamford should definitely keep his day job.

The Lacombe country music singer’s latest album, Day Job, has earned him the most nominations of any artist for the 2010 Canadian Country Music Association Awards, which take place in Edmonton in September.

Bamford leads the pack with six nominations, including Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Single of the Year for Day Job.

“Cowboys aren’t supposed to cry, so I won’t,” Bamford said Wednesday at the nominations announcement in Edmonton. “It couldn’t be a better day for me.”

The 34-year-old is also up for the CCMA Fans’ Choice Award along with Johnny Reid, Doc Walker, George Canyon and Edmonton-based musician Corb Lund.

“I was more surprised than anyone to get that,” Bamford said of the Fans’ Choice nomination. Before performing at the event, he took his hat off to other musicians. “Alberta’s a hotbed of country (music) entertainment. It’s tough to compete with you people.”

Lund didn’t fare too badly himself. The alt-country rocker is up for five awards, including the Fans’ Choice award, Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Roots Artist or Group of the Year, an award he has already scooped up six times.

“No kidding? That’s awesome,” a surprised Lund said Wednesday from Edmonton. “Home field advantage. It’s a compliment, for sure.”

Tied with Lund with five nominations each are Dean Brody, Doc Walker and Johnny Reid.

Hobbema’s Shane Yellowbird is up against Bamford and Lund in the Video of the Year category.

And Edmonton trio Hey Romeo is up for Group or Duo of the Year for the second time. Darren Gusnowsky, who sings and plays guitar with the band, did a fist pump and let out an excited “Yes!” when the nominations were announced.

“It’s such an honour,” Gusnowsky said Wednesday. “Everyone says that, but it is, just to get into the top five.”

Grande Prairie’s Carolyn Dawn Johnson will vie for the Female Artist of the Year award against Terri Clark, who grew up in Medicine Hat, Victoria Banks, Jessie Farrell and Crystal Shawanda.

St. Albert’s Marlee Scott is up for the CCMA’s Rising Star award, as are Canadian Idol finalist Jaydee Bixby of Drumheller and La Crete, Alta. group High Valley.

Other nominees include The Higgins, One More Girl and The Road Hammers.

The CCMA Awards show happens at Rexall Place Sept. 12.
